Project Background

The SIGAP (Inspiring Citizen Action for Change) approach is a community empowerment framework developed based on YKAN’s experiences and best practices across various regions of Indonesia. True to its name, this approach encourages villagers to harness their internal potential and take concrete action to achieve a prosperous life amidst sustainable natural resources.

Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) is expanding its SIGAP-based village assistance program to more villages across Rote Ndao Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. This expansion is vital because the waters around Rote Island belong to the Savu Sea Marine National Park, and seaweed farming is the primary livelihood for local communities. Through grassroots-level support, village governments are expected to align village development planning, seaweed farming activities, and other sustainable fishery sectors with the concept of sustainable development within conservation areas. This effort also serves as a tangible contribution to the overall management effectiveness of the Savu Sea Marine National Park."

By implementing the SIGAP Approach in coastal areas, YKAN is committed to building community capacity and self-reliance. This empowers villagers to adopt sustainable resource practices and actively protect their local ecosystems.
