Description:

In 2024, YKAN is starting the KORALESTARI Program, “Sustaining Indonesia’s Coral Reefs through Bankable Conservation and Restoration Initiatives,” funded by Global Funds for Coral Reef (GFCR). The program aims to address the decline of coral reef health in Indonesia, due to unsustainable fishing and aquaculture, uncontrolled coastal development, land and marine pollution, climate change impacts, and invasive species. The program will operate between 2023 and 2029 in three priority areas: Berau in East Kalimantan, Savu Sea in East Nusa Tenggara, and Natuna Sea, Riau Islands. In the first 18 months, YKAN is implementing the Inception Phase of the program. The key aim for this phase is to conduct policy, research, and preparation work to start implementing the financial mechanisms and technical assistance activities by the end of the inception phase. In parallel, YKAN is implementing a program on “Improving Local Community’s Livelihood through Coastal Mangrove Ecosystem Protection and Restoration in Bangka Belitung Islands” funded by Yayasan Tahija from June 2024 until June 2030. The program's overall goal is to develop and implement Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) that will mitigate and avoid greenhouse gas emissions and improve coastal resilience and the livelihood of the community that depends on the ecosystem in Bangka and Belitung.

Both programs aim to address climate change impacts and improve coastal resilience for coastal communities. As we know, climate change magnifies the risks and vulnerabilities of coastal communities associated with natural disasters due to changing patterns of some climate hazards. This condition is exacerbated by increased population exposure and land-use changes damaging the coastal ecosystem. Climate change may affect differently in regions and groups. Understanding the climate risks, hazards, exposures, and the effects thereof on the communities is the first step to measuring the community’s adaptive capacities to design sustainable solutions. To support that, YKAN will assist coastal communities, especially at the village level, in assessing their climate risks, including identifying and adopting disaster risk-reduction and climate change adaptation strategies that contribute to ecosystem resilience and reduce community vulnerability.

YKAN will carry out community-based vulnerability assessments in the priority areas of the programs. The assessments will be conducted in 10 villages (4 villages in Lingga Regency, Riau Islands Province, and 6 villages in Bangka Belitung Province).
