Overview:

In 2024, YKAN is starting the KORALESTARI Program “Sustaining Indonesia’s Coral Reefs through Bankable Conservation and Restoration Initiatives” funded by Global Funds for Coral Reef (GFCR). The program aims to address the decline of coral reef health in Indonesia due to unsustainable fishing and aquaculture, uncontrolled coastal development, land and marine pollution, climate change impacts, and invasive species. The program operates between 2023 and 2029 in three priority areas: Berau in East Kalimantan, Savu Sea in East Nusa Tenggara, and Natuna Sea, Riau Islands. In the first 18 months, YKAN is implementing the Inception Phase of the program. The key aim for this phase is to conduct policy, research, and preparation work to start implementing the financial mechanisms and technical assistance activities by the end of the inception phase.

2.      To identify and assess potential partners for such a mechanism.

3.      To identify suitable pilot locations in Berau Regency.

4.      To develop a roadmap for implementing the recommended innovative reef financing mechanism in Berau Regency.
